THE BRUTAL TRUTH ABOUT DRUGS

The recent critical comments made by Major Brian Watters of the Salvation
Army regarding the placement of syringe disposal bins on Ansett aircraft
illuminate the inappropriateness of his selection as chair of the Prime
Minister's Advisory Committee on Drugs.

Whilst he is entitled to his opinion, it is one that is based in naive
ideology rather than in reality. People from all walks of life use drugs and
drug use in our society is endemic.

Ansett is acting responsibly by placing syringe bins in aircraft toilets so
as to facilitate the safe disposal of syringes, minimise the potential for
needle-stick injuries to their staff and patrons, and reduce its legal
liability.

This may bean unfortunate sign of the times but it is nevertheless an issue
we must face.
