LEGALIZE IT

Debra J. Saunders presents cogent talking points in "N.Y. Times
editorial: Legalize marijuana," on why our federal policy prohibiting
marijuana use "doesn't work" ( July 29).

The cost of its enforcement, the unnecessary prison sentences and the
continued existence of a "criminal" black market are indeed the
vestiges of its prohibition. Still, Californians rejected Proposition
19 in 2010, which would have legalized marijuana use in our state.

The opponents of this legislation apparently convinced enough
middle-aged and older voters that its passage would have resulted in
stoned state workers (nurses, police and firefighters) unable to
perform their duties, and teenage pot users driving recklessly on our
freeways.

When the issue of legalizing marijuana is again presented to voters,
perhaps less emphasis should be placed on the drug being less harmful
than tobacco and alcohol, or even the prospect of its raising our tax
revenues.

Instead, reassure the opponents that sales of marijuana to minors will
be strictly prohibited, and that its legalization will actually
enhance our personal freedom by diminishing governmental interference
in our daily lives.
