U.S. READER DISAGREES WITH MP OVER DRUG SENTENCES

To the editor:

Re: 'MP Wants Tougher Sentences For Drug Traffickers', Feb. 18, 2011.

I strongly disagree with Northumberland-Quinte West MP Rick Norlock's
claim that the majority of Canadians support Bill S-10, making
mandatory minimum prison terms for growing even small amounts of
cannabis (marijuana).

Newspaper articles about this issue throughout Canada indicate the
majority don't support Bill S-10 and are even unable to get a price
tag for the discredited law. Another thing North Americans are
reading is that roughly 50 per cent of all Canadians support
completely legalizing and regulating the relatively safe, extremely
popular plant, cannabis.

Law enforcement agencies and their unions don't speak for the
majority, they speak for job security at the expense of the majority.
