PRAISE FOR MARIJUANA BUST IS SIGN OF INSANITY

Saturday's Times Herald editorial praising the work of the St. Clair
County Drug Task Force in arresting suspects with 409 pounds of
marijuana just perpetuates the myth that law enforcement and
incarceration will somehow, someday effectively eliminate drug use.

We've been engaged in the "War on Drugs" for at least 40 years with
nothing to show for it except more drugs (that are cheaper and more
potent), more prisons, more inmates, more ex-cons, more police, richer
lawyers, gang wars, smuggling and rampant corruption.

To continue the same action and expect a different result is a sign of
insanity. I'm willing to bet a review of the Times Herald editorials
from the late 1920s through 1932 would show the same praise for those
smashing booze bottles and beer barrels.

The American public finally demanded the repeal of Prohibition.
Hopefully, we will someday decriminalize the drugs on which we now
waste far too much time and resources.
