They can all share the blame for perpetuating the war on drug crimes. The only difference between the gangland wars during prohibition and the current gangland wars from drug prohibition is the enormity and length. This 30-year war is the longest, most expensive and most destructive ever. When will the city, the media and our legislators own up to the fact that history is repeating itself -- and in a big way? The remedy is legalization and regulation. Polls show that a majority of Americans favor medicinal cannabis, and it has already been approved in eight states. Self medication with commonly available, homegrown remedies will never stop. It is time to stop repeating the mistakes of the past and treat habitual street drug users like alcoholics, with doctors and hospitals -- not prisons and guards. It is long past time for the city, the media and our legislators to ask: How soon can we end this destructive drug war and have peace in our cities?
