DID DRUG CZAR MISDIAGNOSE PROBLEM?

Regulate Marijuana Sales

"Drug czar" John Walters, in his attempt to save us from the dangers of 
marijuana use, seems to make an excellent case for legalizing it ("Drug 
czar Walters: Marijuana most abused drug," Sept. 13).

He states the THC content in marijuana has increased from 1 percent in the 
1970s to 14 percent today. If the drug were legalized and regulated, that 
could be controlled. He goes on to say teens are trying the drug.

Again, if it were regulated and sold only at licensed outlets, buyers would 
have to show identification, as they do for alcohol and cigarettes. He 
admits the toxicity quality of marijuana is less than that of alcohol, 
which can be purchased legally. His argument is that marijuana is dangerous 
when used with other drugs. Most drugs, including alcohol, can be dangerous 
when mixed with other drugs.

He states, "When we push back against this problem with common sense ways, 
like prevention, treatment and enforcement, it shrinks." Great idea: 
Educate people about marijuana's possible health hazards, treat the abusers 
and ensure those who use the drug are at least 18. Then let informed adults 
decide whether to assume the risks of using marijuana, as they do with 
cigarettes and alcohol.
