FIREFIGHTERS' CASE NOT SIMPLE

Congratulations on Renee Frank to a well-written letter ("Ax
drug-using firefighter," Feb. 6). Pretty good for a 13-year old!

May I offer some questions to suggest that things are not always as
simple as they look?

You seem to think that all laws should be obeyed. Does that mean you
would have criticized the black woman who sat in the whites-only
section of the bus in the deep South?

Does the U.S. Constitution allow the government to punish people for
what they choose to ingest into their own bodies? I don't think so,
but you should check this out for yourself.

The legal drugs of alcohol and tobacco are every bit as harmful as
marijuana. So why not fire firefighters who send the wrong message by
using alcohol or tobacco?
