To the Editor of The Chico News & Review:
Thanks for publishing Stan White's thoughtful letter: "CAGED FOR A
PLANT?" (12-5-13).
I'd like to add that marijuana is a criminalized substance primarily
because of the efforts
of one man: Harry Anslinger. In 1937 Anslinger testified before the U.
S. Congress urging
the criminalizing of cannabis or marijuana. Below are some of his quotes.
"...the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the
degenerate races."
"Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing."
"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are
Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music,
jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white
women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others."
"Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men."
"Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity,
criminality, and death."
"You smoke a joint and you're likely to kill your brother."
"Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind."
I suggest that if Mr. Anslinger's reasons are valid then we should keep
marijuana a criminalized
substance. And if Mr. Anslinger's reasons are not valid, then we should
end the insanity of
marijuana prohibition.

To the Editor of The Ledger-enquirer:
I'm writing about Teo Ballve's outstanding oped: Futile drug war just
drags on" (12-8-13)
Marijuana is the foundation of our so-called war on drugs. Remove
marijuana from the equation and the whole drug war will collapse.
The so-called war on drugs is a huge industry and huge bureaucracy.
Victory in the drug war is not possible, nor is it the goal. Victory in
the drug war would mean that the drug war industry and bureaucracy are
out of business.
There are basically two kinds of people who support the so-called war on
drugs:
Those who make their livelihood from it. This includes politicians and
bureaucrats who are probably on the payroll of the drug cartels. (Al
Capone had hundreds of politicians and prohibition officials on his
payroll).
Fools -- taxpayers who have bought into the lies and propaganda of the
drug-war industry and bureaucracy.
Fools -- who are willing to deny liberty and freedom to others but think
that their own liberty and freedom will never be in jeopardy.
Fools -- who believe that criminalizing a substance will make it go away.
Fools -- who think that drug prohibition somehow protects children.
Fools -- who think that giving criminals control of dangerous drugs
somehow protects children and our society.
Fools -- who think that they live in a free country even though the
United States is the most incarcerated nation in the history of human
civilization.
