To the Editor of The Topeka Capital-Journal:
I'm writing about the not-so-thoughtful letter from Bernard Heeney:
"Governor's actions speak louder than words"
(10-18-13).
I thought Gov. Sam Brownback was a conservative and that true
conservatives oppose nanny-state policies. Obviously, I was wrong.
What could be more pro-nanny-state than marijuana prohibition?
Beyond the fact that marijuana prohibition is counterproductive and a
complete waste of money, what about the right of adult citizens to be
left alone - especially in the privacy of our own homes?
We don't punish those who attempt suicide and survive. So why do we
punish those who consume the wrong (politically selected) recreational
drugs?
I don't want my government attempting to protect me from myself. I want
my government to protect me from those who want to harm me against my will.
Today, our nanny-state government tells us which recreational drugs we
may or may not consume. Note that Viagra is OK, but marijuana is not.
Note that nicotine is OK, but marijuana is not.
Tomorrow, our nanny-state government will tell us which foods we may or
may not eat.
Those who oppose the use of marijuana, medical or otherwise, should opt
to not buy it, grow it or use it. Period.

Radley:
I just finished reading your outstanding book: "Rise of the Warrior
Cop" and I think I have a solution
to ending our drug war and SWAT raids. Require that all SWAT raids be
video taped before, during
and after, with sound. And these tapes must be available to the news
media immediately after the
raids.
I believe that if all of the raids that involved the wrong address or
the killing of any people or pets or in front
of children, the public will be outraged and demand an end to them.
Best regards,

To the Editor of The Sun-Sentinel:
I'm writing about Justin Pearson's thoughtful oped: "Policing for profit
a nationwide epidemic" (10-21-13).
I'd like to add that those who think that drug prohibition somehow
protects our children and society, I'd like them to search on Google or
Youtube for "Retired Police Captain demolishes the war on drugs."
You will see that our so-called war on drugs substantially increases all
other crime. Back in the 1960s, police solved more than 90 percent of
all homicides. Today they solve just over 60 percent. Why? Because of
our so-called war on drugs. There are huge financial incentives for
police to make drug busts and confiscate the drug dealers' money and
property, but no financial incentive to solve rapes, robberies or murders.
