To the Editor of The Albany Herald:
Kudos to Cynthia Tucker for her outstanding column: : "It's time to
decriminalize pot possession" (8-17-13).
I agree with everything she wrote except for her call to decriminalize
marijuana. Decriminalization is not the answer.
Decriminalization of use is what we had with alcohol during Prohibition
(producers and suppliers were punished but not consumers). The only
answer is full legalization.
Only fully legal products can be regulated by any government agency.
Only fully legal products can be controlled by any government agency.
And only fully legal products can be taxed by any government agency.
Decriminalization leaves the control and distribution of marijuana in
the hands of criminal gangs. We need full legalization of marijuana like
alcohol and tobacco.

To the Editor of The Commercial Appeal:
Kudos to Leonard Pitts, Jr. for his outstanding column: "An End To The
War On Drugs" (8-18-13).
I submit that there should no punishment at all for any so-called drug
crime.
In a drug transaction, there are willing buyers and willing sellers.
Presumably, both will walk away happy unless one or both are arrested.
Our US government cannot protect adult citizens from themselves, and our
government shouldn't attempt to do so.
A so-called free country should be a truly free country - with adult
citizens taking responsibility for their own behavior, whether it is
wise or foolish.
