To the Editor of The Oklahoman:
Thanks for publishing Robert Sharpe's thoughtful letter: "Time to end
marijuana prohibition" (11-30-12).
For those who think that marijuana prohibition somehow protects our
children and society, I'd like them to view this short You Tube video
featuring former California Superior Court
Judge James P. Gray:

You will see that marijuana prohibition substantially increases all
other crime. Back in the 1960's police solved more than ninety percent
of all homicides. Today that solve just over sixty percent of all
murders. Why? Because of our so-called war on drugs. There are great
financial incentives for police to make drug busts and confiscate the
drug dealers money and property but no financial incentive to solve
rapes or murders.

OpEd, "Time has come to legalize marijuana" 02 Dec 2012
My thanks to John Hubbard for writing it, and the Times for printing it.
I too am in my 70s and don't smoke.
Marijuana prohibition (Let's call it what it is: cannabis prohibition.)
is the most wasteful, destructive social policy since the Jim Crow laws
of the Deep South. I don't know what it will take to reach the tipping
point toward legal cannabis, but data is accumulating that may help.
Researchers at universities in Colorado, Oregon and Montana have been
studying the 14 states that enacted medical marijuana laws from 1990
through 2010. They found that medical cannabis is accompanied by
decreases of 8% to 11% traffic fatalities, with strong indications that
is related to observed decreases in alcohol consumption.** The study
accounted for the variables normally credited for such decreases: driver
training, speed limits, seat belt laws, cell phone laws, legal drinking
age, unemployment rate, beer tax rate, DUI laws and expenditures for
traffic enforcement and highway maintenance.
These researchers plan to look at crime rates in these 14 states. Does
anyone really believe legal cannabis will be found to be associated with
more domestic violence, barroom fights, turf battles and murders? Not I.

I'd like to add that those who want to know who benefits for our
continued war on marijuana users, I suggest they go toYoutube.com and
search for "Judge James P. Gray"
or "Judge Jim Gray"
Marijuana prohibition has increased the number of marijuana users from
100,000 in 1937 to more than 100 million today. This is a 1,000 fold
increase.

Subj: 006 LTE: Re: Charles Stimson andThe Heritage Foundation
From: Kirk Muse <>
Date: Tue, 4 Dec 2012 10:38:43 -0800
To the Editor of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Re: "How pot advocates are manipulating the truth" by Charles Stimson.
Charles Stimson claims to be a senior legal fellow at The Heritage
Foundation. I thought The Heritage Foundation was a conservative
organization and that true conservatives oppose nanny-state policies.
Obviously, I was wrong.
What could be more pro-nanny-state than marijuana prohibition?
Beyond the fact that marijuana prohibition is counterproductive and a
complete waste of money, what about the right of adult citizens to be
left alone - especially in the privacy of our own homes?
We don't punish those who attempt suicide and survive. So why do we
punish those who consume the wrong (politically selected) recreational
drugs?
I don't want my government attempting to protect me from myself. I want
my government to protect me from those who want to harm me against my will.
Today, our nanny-state government tells us which recreational drugs we
may or may not consume. Note that Viagra is OK, but marijuana is not.
Note that nicotine is OK, but marijuana is not.
Tomorrow, our nanny-state government will tell us which foods we may or
may not eat.
Those who oppose the use of marijuana, medical or otherwise, should opt
to not buy it, grow it or use it. Period.

To the Editor of The Tucson Weekly:
Kudos to J. M. Smith for his outstanding column: "Prison for pot"
(12-6-12). Reading this column made me both mad and sad. Mad and sad
that an adult citizen is going to spend the rest of his life in a
federal prison for gardening. I am both mad and sad that our once free
country is now the most incarcerated nation in the history of human
civilization.
Many American's proclaim that they are proud to be an American. I am
not. I am not proud to live in a country that has 25 percent of the
world's prisoners. I am not proud to live
in a country where adults cannot even decide for themselves what they
can put into their own bodies in the privacy of their own homes without
the threat of going to jail or prison for doing so.
I strongly urge the readers to check out this Youtube video featuring
California Superior Court Judge James P. Gray:http://tinyurl.com/yawdqzv.
