Editors, Buffalo News -
Recent opinion pieces about pot.
Out of the blue: medical pot reduces traffic fatalities! That's
according to researchers at Montana State University, the University of
Oregon and the University of Colorado, Denver. Traffic fatalities go
down by 8%-11% in states when they phase in medical marijuana. Beer
consumption goes down too. Coincidence? maybe. For details see
http://dmarkanderson.com/Medical_Marijuana_Accidents_and_Alcohol_10_16
That's a windfall for insurance companies, surely enough to pay for
medical pot for sick people.

To the Editor of The Huntsville Item:
Re: "A real drug lab in two states" (11-22-12).
Is there any legitimate reason that a natural herb that has never killed
anybody should be classified the same as heroin? I think not.
Marijuana is a good substitute for potentially deadly painkillers such
as Vicodin and is also a substitute for alcohol.
The pharmaceutical industry knows this, and so does the alcohol industry.
And this is probably why marijuana remains a criminalized substance.

To the Editor of The Colorado Springs Gazette:
Major kudos for your outstanding Editorial: "Laws cannot stop marijuana
use" (11-24-12). I'd like to add that rape kits are going unused and
murders are going unsolved because of our war on drugs. There are major
financial incentives for police agencies to make drug busts and
confiscate their money and property. But no financial incentive to solve
rapes and murders.
There are lots of victims of our failed war on drugs including rape victims.
Do I suggest that all drugs should be sold like they were 100 years ago
in grocery stores and pharmacies with no questions asked? No. I believe
marijuana should be legally available to any adult and sold anywhere
alcohol and tobacco products are sold.
For hard drugs like heroin and cocaine I suggest that we adopt the Swiss
drug policy. Switzerland used to have a very serious heroin addiction
problem. Now their heroin problem is a small fraction of what it used to be.
Did the Swiss government get really tough on drug dealers and addicts? No.
In 1994, Switzerland started an experimental program to sell heroin
addicts the drug at very low cost, even giving it to the addicts who
couldn’t afford it. In 2008, 68 percent of the Swiss voted to make the
program permanent.
Have Swiss heroin-addiction rates skyrocketed? No, they have fallen
dramatically.
And so has their overall crime rate.
For the record, I have never even seen cocaine or heroin, (except on TV)
let alone have used either of them.

To the Editor of The Freeport Journal-Standard:
I'm writing about your story: "Local man arrested for cannabis
possession" (11-28-12). I sure hope the citizens and taxpayers of
Freeport feel safer now that a heinous
marijuana dealer is off the streets. The fact is that people are
substantially less safe today because of our so-called war on drugs. I
suggest that the readers view a short
video featuring Stephen Downing the former Deputy Chief of Police of the
Los Angeles Police Department: http://tinyurl.com/b3juxa4 (or)
http://therealnews.com/t2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31
During the 1960's more than ninety percent of all murders were solved.
Now just over sixty percent of all murders are solved. Why? Because of
our war on drugs.
There are great financial incentives for police to make drug busts and
confiscate the drug dealers money and property but no financial
incentive to solve rapes or murders.
