To the Editor of The Columbian:
I'm writing about Herb Maxey's not-so-thoughtful letter: "'No' to
legalizing marijuana" (8-28-12). Obviously Maxey is opposed to the use
of marijuana. So I have some simple advice for him: Don't buy it, don't
grow it and don't use it. Period.
Most people who use marijuana do so for the same reason people use
alcohol. Because I prefer marijuana to alcohol does that make me a bad
person? And because I prefer marijuana to powerful and dangerous
painkillers like Vicodin, does this make me a bad person?

Re: Sarah Stillman's "The Throwaways", September 3, 2012
Excellent report on the downside of using defendants as snitches to
enable buy/bust arrests. My only complaint is its tacit message that
protecting snitches would be an important step toward a drug-free
society. While we continue to try to make the drug war work, the rest of
the world is taking a different approach. The best example is Global
Commission on Drugs (http://www.globalcommissionondrugs.org/) comprised
of former leaders of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Greece, and Switzerland;
also Kofi Annan, Richard Branson, George Shultz and Paul Volcker. The
GCD has called for a paradigm shift in global drug policy to base policy
on results, not ideology.
Well-intentioned American leaders initiated drug prohibition 100 years
ago by trying to stop drugs from coming to the U.S. from their source
countries. When it didn't work, we escalated enforcement, only to cause
more societal damage than we prevented. Now we must admit a mistake and
heed the advice of the GCD.

To the Editor of The Cortez Journal:
I'm writing about the not-so-thoughtful oped by Sheriff Dennis Spruell:
"The Stoner State" (9-3-12). I notice that Colorado currently has legal
beer and wine. Should we not call it 'The drunk state'? You have been
working on a "Drug Free Colorado" for more than forty years. How is this
working out? For Sheriff Spruell it's probably good. I am sure he would
much rather arrest a marijuana user or seller rather than 'real'
criminals. 'Real' criminals tend to be violent. Not so with marijuana
users.
