The Afghan drug efforts don't lack a strategy. They lack
a good strategy. The only strategy that will work is to
allow farmers all over the world to grow poppies. Then
the Afghan poppies will become almost worthless.

I'm writing about your not-so-thoughtful editorial:
"Cut the red tape to help Mexico fight drug lords" (12-24-09). Throwing
more money on the Mexican drug war bon fire will not solve its drug
prohibition problem. Ending U. S. and Mexico's drug prohibition is the
only solution.
76 years ago we terminated alcohol prohibition because of the violent
crime it caused. Why can't we learn the same lesson about drug
prohibition--
especially marijuana prohibition?

You can expect that prior to the 2010 election
lots of people and organizations with a vested financial
interest in the status quo of marijuana criminalization
will shout lies and propaganda about marijuana.
Among those who will finance the lies and propaganda
will be the California Peace Officers Association, the
California Narcotics Officers Association, the prison
guards union, the prison builders lobby. And last, but
certainly not the least, the Mexican drug cartels.

Re:Your editorial "Cut The Red Tape To Help Mexico Fight Drug Lords"
Expediting more funds to fight the cartels puts us deeper in the soup.
It's not a typical war, where fighting harder weakens the enemy.
Escalating THIS war strengthens the enemy by increasing drug price and
the money American drug users send south to the cartels.
Thus we bankroll both sides of the war, just we did in the 1920s to
block liquor from reaching American drinkers. It didn't work either.
The only solution is to take out the money by regulating these drugs the
way we did for the drug, alcohol, in 1933. And in the 76 years since,
there has not been a single serious proposal to go back.

I'm responding the the outstanding letter from Mike Meno: "Marijuana
has proven medical history" (12-24-09).
I'd like to add that one of the medications prescribed by my personal
physician for my arthritis pain and inflammation, has the rare potential
side effect of death. In other words, if I take this medication as
prescribed, I can die as a result.
On the other hand, marijuana has never been documented to kill a single
person in the 5,000 year history of its use.
For me, marijuana is the more effective medication. Right now, if
adult citizens opt for the safer and more effective medication,
they are subject to arrest and being sent to jail with violent criminals.
Is something wrong with this situation? I think so.
Shouldn't adult citizens have the freedom to choose what goes into their
own bodies in the privacy of their own homes?

I'm writing about Loretta Nall's thoughtful letter: "Corrections:
Release inmates to save money" (12-25-09).
While Connecticut and many other states are trying to figure out how to
close their massive budget shortfalls, the Dutch in the Netherlands are
trying to figure out what to do with their closed prisons.
While the Netherlands has a total population of about 16.5 million, it
has only about 12,000 prisoners. On the other hand, the United States
has greater than 2,300,000 total prisoners.
If my math is correct, we in the U. S. have 18.2 times the Dutch
general population and 191.6 times their prison population.
Why the glaring disparity? I suggest it’s our drug policies.
In the Netherlands, adult citizens can use, buy and possess small
amounts of marijuana without criminal sanctions. In the United States,
adult citizens are subject to arrest, and jail or prison for buying,
selling or possessing various amounts of marijuana.

The only way to stop the drugs coming in is to make it economically

All other efforts are futile.

alcohol, they should be allowed to consume marijuana.
Marijuana is substantially safer than either tobacco that contains
nicotine or alcohol. (No reported deaths in the 5,000 year history of

People consume marijuana for the same reasons they consume alcohol. Why
not offer adults the much safer alternative to alcohol?

Until this false belief can be changed, marijuana will probably remain

Editors, The Washington Post -
Mexico's drug war reminds me of our 19th Century "tar baby" story.
(originally "Anansi the Spider" of West African culture).
Bre'r Fox sets up the tar baby to attract Bre'r Rabbit as he walks along
the road. Bre'r Rabbit sees the tar baby and speaks to him. When the tar
baby doesn't answer, Bre'r Rabbit punches him and gets stuck. That make
him angrier so he punches him again, and so on, until he is an easy prey
for Bre'r Fox.
The Cartels are Bre'r Fox, Sr. Calderone is Bre'r Rabbit. Drug
prohibition is the tar baby, and the U.S. is an advisor to Sr.Calderone.
Clear enough?

To the Editor of The Santa Maria Times:
I'm writing about: "An officers final DARE" (12-21-09).
Common sense tells us that the DARE program should deter
our youth from using illegal drugs. But it doesn't. DARE
graduates are more likely to use illegal drugs--not less.
Common sense tells us that the Earth is the center of the
universe and our solar system. But it's not.
Common sense tells us that prohibiting a product should
substantially reduce the use of the product that's prohibited.
Actually, prohibition tends to substantially increase the desire
for the product that's prohibited.
Before marijuana was criminalized in the U. S. via the Marijuana
Tax Act of 1937, the vast majority of Americans had never
heard of marijuana. Now everybody in the U. S. knows what
marijuana is and the U. S. government estimates that at least
100 million Americans have used it. About half of all high
school students will use marijuana before they graduate.
People want what they are told they cannot have--especially
children. The lure of the "forbidden fruit" is very powerful.

Editors -
Linda Taylor's letter of December 25th could have been written about
liquor, prohibited under U.S. law 1920-1933. Let me apply her 11 points,
one by one, to liquor as if it were 1919.
1. A drinker's use is not confined to the user; it intrudes on the lives
of other citizens. Men spend their Friday paychecks in the saloons.
2. There is monumental evidence that proves the correlation between
drinking, and spousal abuse. We all know of "the bad husband"
3. There is evidence that proves drug use impacts the quality of life of
entire communities. We have all seen drunkards lying in the gutter.
4. Women overwhelmingly support legislation for prohibition.
5. We all know that liquor is an intoxicant, with little value compared
to the societal damage it does.
6. Liquor must prohibited by federal law.
7. More people are in treatment for alcohol than all other drugs combined.
8. It is well established that alcohol causes cirrhosis of the liver
and alcoholism. Further, long term drinking destroys brain cells.
9. Alcohol ruins the lives of youth and is a major cause of job
absenteeism. Both Henry Ford and Thomas Edison attest to that fact.
10. The alcohol industry should be shut down. Period.
11. We all know that most "Wets" lie. They simply want to drink.
Yet, in spite of that 11 point indictment, liquor was re-legalized in
1933 and, in the ensuing 76 years, we have not gone back. The reason is
that prohibition's unintended consequences overshadow its benefits.

A war on drugs is a fool's errand. Fighting harder only makes it worse.
Fighting a regular enemy diminishes his resources, thus decreasing his
ability to attract allies. Fighting a drug kingpin increases his profit,
thus attracting even more violent competitors to take over his turf.
Cash seizures look good on TV, but are a spit in the ocean. The violence
will decrease when the profit motive ends, not before.
