To the Editor of The State Journal-Register:

Thanks for publishing Dennis Garland's thoughtful letter:
"Some constituents need action, not clips" (11-22-09).

Shouldn't adult citizens have the fundamental right to
decide for themselves what natural herbs to consume
in the privacy of their own homes without the threat
of being arrested and thrown in jail with violent
criminals? I think so.

Thank you for considering this letter for publication.

Re: Juarez Violence a "Terrorist War"

Labeling the violence "terrorist" is misleading, because its origin has
nothing to do with ideology. Its origin is the immense profit of the
illegal drug market enabled by decades of U.S. drug prohibition.

Current policy to shut down the illegal market by trying harder won't
work; it only increases the profit and attracts more violent men to the
trade. Americans saw that happen when they escalated the penalties for
bootlegging almost every year for 13 years. Then they woke up and
re-legalized alcohol in 1933. We will end today's violence only when we
understand how it came to be.

I cringe slightly reading the phrase "medical marijuana", because the '30s slang term for Cannabis has no place in a serious discussion.

But then the first paragraph of this piece informs "hyperactive kids" that they can "get stoned". It would be optimal if that sort of "journalism" had gone out along with with Hearst's quotes of Harry Anslinger.

It is certainly NOT about "kids getting stoned" and such rhetoric is patently offensive to THIS glaucoma patient, not to mention the parties involved.

Take the time to read "Jeffrey's Journey" and report back to us, please, Catey.
