The U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen will announce the
service's record drug seizure year tomorrow at noon at the Coast Guard
Headquarters, 2100 Second St., SW, Washington, D.C.

In addition to the Commandant, speakers for Thursday's event will
include John Walters, director, White House Office of National Drug
Control Policy and Mike Braun, chief of operations, Drug Enforcement
Agency. Officials from the Department of Defense, Immigration and
Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Patrol, as well as
representatives from France, United Kingdom, Panama and Mexico will
also attend the event.

New technology, more aggressive tactics and a climate of =93jointness=94
made fiscal 2007 a record-setting year for marine drug interdiction,
top homeland security officials said Dec. 6 at Coast Guard Headquarters =20
in Washington, D.C.
The Coast Guard and its U.S. and international partners seized 350,000 =20
pounds of cocaine, worth about $4.7 billion, from re-purposed
commercial ships, =93go-fast=94 speedboats and even minisubmarines in
the
eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Drug-control officials claimed =20
that the results were visible throughout the U.S; tightened border and =20
maritime enforcement, they said, has meant that the average quality of =20
street cocaine has declined while its average price has spiked in
dozens of U.S. cities, although that was difficult to independently
verify.
Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen, who pointed out that the street =20
value of the drugs seized in 2007 equals almost half the Coast Guard=92s
yearly budget, said he was pleased =93all that poison would not end up
in
our schools and on our streets and threaten our families.=94
The 2007 haul is the latest in a succession of years for which the
Coast Guard has announced record drug seizures, all because of a level =20
of federal and international cooperation that Allen called the closest =20
he=92s seen in his career. Much credit goes to the contributions of the =20
U.S. Navy and allied Central and South American maritime forces, Allen =20
said, because about half the maritime drug seizures in fiscal 2007 were =20
made by U.S. frigates or international ships carrying Coast Guard
enforcement teams.
It was unclear how much of the total amount of cocaine destined for the =20
U.S. in 2007 was intercepted in the maritime seizures.
The Office of National Drug Control Policy estimates that in 2005, the =20
last year for which data were available, the main coca region of
Colombia produced approximately 1.8 million pounds of cocaine, although =20
not all of that was shipped to the U.S., Allen said.
