Here's a rebuff to Sandra S. Bennett's ignorant ranting.

I don't know where Sandra S. Bennett gets her "facts" about Alcohol
Prohibition, but the 1926 Senate NATIONAL PROHIBITION LAW HEARINGS
painted a very different picture. None of the Senate testimony
showed success for any aspect of Alcohol Prohibition. (see -

Bennett's 'Prohibition Yearbook' omits the wave of police corruption
that Alcohol Prohibition laws caused. She also neglects to mention
the hundreds of bombings and drive-by shootings caused by rival
bootleggers.
Ms Bennet's 'Prohibition Yearbook' completely misses the fact that
Alcohol prohibition didn't do anything to reduce drinking problems.
Indeed, Alcohol Prohibition made matters much worse. The Metropolitan
Insurance Co. reported that there was a decided decline in alcoholism
deaths among its policyholders between 1917 and 1920, the year the
Volstead Act went into effect, but from 1920 to 1925 alcohol related
deaths rose from 0.6 deaths per 100,000 policyholders to 2.9 deaths
per 100,000, a rate nearly five times the figure for 1920. Thousands
of young people suffered permanent brain damage, blindness, liver
damage, paralysis and death from rotgut liquor every year during
alcohol prohibition.
Bennet hopes we don't know about the drinking epidemic among children
that had not been there before Prohibition. History shows that
Alcohol Prohibition caused the worst epidemic of teen alcoholism
before or since. Entire schools were closed because of student
drunkenness. Every high school had its own inhouse bootlegger to keep
the kids hip flasks filled. Nowadays every high school has several
drug dealers ready to supply whatever a kid has the money to pay for.
No rational person should believe that a drug crusade based on the
same principles as Alcohol Prohibition has any chance of success no
matter how tough the laws become.

marijuana, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday,
December 6, to challenge Proposition 215, the 1996 Compassionate Use

"The calendar also represents the diversity of those of us
dissatisfied with the =98war on drugs", Swanson continues. Indeed
"Hottie" is broadly defined by these activists; the models range in age
from 21 to 77 with an equally wide spectrum of race, size, and gender
represented in the black and white photos.
The controversy around the HIV prevention method in question stems
from what some call a mistaken sense of what needle exchange does and
does not do.
"Syringe exchange is one of the most studied HIV prevention modalities
in history," says Swanson. "No study has ever found a correlation
between needle exchange and increased drug use, and yet that continues
to be the argument against funding it".
In fact, as this year's calendar points out, people who use syringe
exchange are more likely to enter drug treatment than those who do not.

Also in 2005, four initiatives with the required 100,000 signatures
were handed in to the government, two succeeded in getting the required
signatures but haven't yet been handed in, and four fell at the first
fence by failing to get enough signatures.
The initiative to decriminalise cannabis is set to be handed in to the
government on January 13, 2006.
