Magazine names gay couple top newsmakers

TORONTO - A court ruling declaring Canada's legal definition of marriage a
violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was the inspiration behind Time
magazine's 2003 Canadian newsmaker of the year.
The publication chose Michael Leshner and Michael Stark as top newsmakers for
playing a key role in the legal battle for same-sex marriage rights.
"The Michaels" as they've often been called were granted a marriage licence and
tied the knot in a Toronto ceremony last June after Ontario's highest court
upheld a lower court decision to legally allow same-sex marriages.
The current definition of marriage is invalid and the laws must be changed, the
court said.
Jean Chrétien, then prime minister, later announced the federal government would
not appeal the ruling. By the end of summer, the Liberals had drafted
legislation to formalize the decision and sent it to the Supreme Court for
review.
The magazine's Canadian bureau chief, Steven Frank, says the pair's wedding
started a "cultural revolution."
Leshner, left, told CBC Newsworld Sunday: "It's been a wonderful cultural
revolution."
"But it is neither for their marriage nor their monogamy that the Michaels have
became world famous," he writes.
"The two men have come to symbolize something much bigger: the unprecedented
acceleration of social liberalism in Canada in 2003. From gay marriage to moves
to decriminalize marijuana and provide supervised injection booths for drug
addicts in Vancouver, 2003 will go down in history as the year that Canada
rethought what was taboo."
Leshner told CBC Newsworld he welcomes the newsmaker honours.
"I really do think that the values this case represents and what Mike and I have
come to symbolize, I really feel like we're Canada's new Mary Pickford… we are
Canada's sweethearts," he said.
"What better human rights story to send around the world that says Canada loves
the Michaels, and for the rest of the world to wonder, what on earth is going on
in Canada?"
Leshner said he was determined that eventually he'd win the legal battle to get
married to his partner of over 20 years.
"This was a long fuse, but you know when the fuse went off, I often said there's
no more mortar between the bricks of political and legal homophobia; when it was
exposed, it would go down with one big swish… and it has.
The magazine's U.S. edition chose the anonymous soldier as its "person of the
year."
Time said the soldier, representing nearly 1.5 million men and women in the U.S.
military, bears the duty of "living with and dying for a country's most fateful
decisions."

PoMo pot crackdown
In what is becoming a familiar scene in Port Moody, police seized hundreds of
marijuana plants from an upscale home and arrested its
occupants Monday morning.
Const. Brian Soles of PoMo Police said it was the 24th pot bust in the city
since their campaign on grow-ops started this summer -
and he said it won't be the last.
"We're going to get every one," he said. "We are sending a message loud and
clear."
In the latest take-down, PMPD - with the assistance from Vancouver Police -
raided a pot farm at a large home at 154 Ravine Dr.,
just down from A.J. Food Store.
Police say the house is worth around $500,000 and claim the residents, a man and
a woman, are part of a Vietnamese drug ring that
owns houses on Heritage Mountain.
PoMo Mayor Joe Trasolini, who chairs the PoMo Police Board, said the crackdown
on grow-ops in the city is worth the police
department's time and taxpayers' money.
"There's evidence that they can turn in to methamphetamine labs," Trasolini
said.
In June, when PMPD began its crackdown in earnest, police arrested a couple and
placed their children into the care of B.C.'s
ministry of children and families after a grow-op was allegedly found in their
home in the 100-block of Cedarwood Drive.
And in October, at a house in the 100-block of Aspenwood Drive, investigators
found 500 marijuana plants and arrested a couple in
their 60s. An hour later, PMPD executed a second search warrant at a home on
Balsam Drive and located 800 plants.
PMPD also has discovered grow-ops in homes on Firview and Wildwood Place, and on
Ashwood and Parkside Drives.

Argentine police are reportedly hunting for Diego Maradona's missing penis.
The Daily Star Sunday says that the authorities are searching for the fake penis
which was used by Maradona to beat drug tests when he was a player in Italy.
In a ploy which may or may not have been inspired by the film 'Withnail And I',
the plastic manhood was filled with 'clean' urine so that Maradona could pass
the test.
Alas, the fake penis, the size of which is unknown, has now gone missing after
it was taken on a countrywide tour.
After carefully choosing his words, a police source told the paper, "We're
confident we can sniff it out. It's quite an unusual theft but I suppose it is
valuable because of its former owner.

LONDON -- Rio Ferdinand lined up for Manchester United yesterday two days after
being given an eight-month suspension for failing to take a drug test.
He took his place at the centre of the Reds defence and helped United go atop
the Premier league with a 2-1 victory at Tottenham.
Although the suspension doesn't start until Jan. 12, Alex Ferguson's decision to
field the world's most expensive defender was seen as an act of defiance to
FIFA, which had been campaigning for a two-year ban.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter also had said Ferdinand should not have been allowed
to play since the Sept. 23 missed test and has even threatened to take points
away from the team.
But Ferguson was delighted his defender was able to forget about the ban for 90
minutes and play a part in a victory at White Hart Lane.
"I'm very pleased," said Ferguson. "I think it was probably the best thing to
play him, getting all the things out of his mind and concentrating on playing
again. I think he's acquitted himself very well in the circumstances.
"The boy merits a position in the team because of his performance. Strangely
enough, since it's all happened, he's been better and better.
"He and Mikael Silvestre have formed a fantastic partnership, I feel. And with
Tim Howard in his form it gives us a great backbone, so why should I change it?"
Before the game, Ferguson admitted there were concerns about how Ferdinand would
react to the hearing and the outcome.
"It was a gruelling week," Ferguson said. "He had the tribunal Thursday and
Friday and of course he hadn't trained. And there was the (disciplinary)
decision, how he handled and felt about it.
"He wanted to play. It's a difficult one because you don't know what's
underneath. We're hoping he's going to be all right. No one's unbreakable.
"He's got a good temperament. He's a good player and he's welcome in the team
any time."
Meanwhile, Blatter warned Ferdinand and Manchester United they could expect
"unprecedented repercussions" if they challenge his ban in the civil courts.
Ferdinand and United have said they plan to appeal against what they consider a
"savage" ban.
That would mean taking the case to an FA appeals hearing but Ferguson reportedly
has said he would even go to the civil courts to try and get it overturned.
That, said Blatter, would be a mistake.
"I hear of a threat to go to the civil courts - even to the European courts -
but that is strictly prohibited in our rules," Blatter was quoted as saying
yesterday in the tabloid News of the World.
"And if you take that action, the repercussions will be unprecedented.
"You do not go to court. You present your case to (the Court of Arbitration for
Sport) tribunal in Lausanne or you pay the consequences. These are the rules of
FIFA and they will be adhered to."
FIFA will wait to see how the case goes through the appeal process by the FA
before deciding whether to extend the ban worldwide. That would rule Ferdinand
out of moving to another club, even on loan.
Meanwhile, soccer's European body UEFA said the eight-month ban was in line with
its own guidelines.
"From a UEFA disciplinary standpoint, our view would be that this type of
offence would carry at least a six-month ban so it is in line with what we would
expect to happen if the player had failed to take a test during a UEFA
competition," said spokesman Rob Faulkner.
"Our guidelines state a minimum of six months for a first offence so from our
point of view it would seem appropriate."
Goals by John O'Shea and Ruud van Nistelrooy put the Reds in control before
Gustavo Poyet replied for Spurs. The result means United is the first team to
reach 40 points with Arsenal and Chelsea tied for second on 39.
O'Shea converted a corner from Darren Fletcher in the 15th minute for the Reds,
deflecting the ball into the top corner past Kasey Keller.
RUUD AWAKENING
Van Nistelrooy took a pass from Ryan Giggs to run clear of the defence in the
26th minute and make it 2-0 for and score his 33rd goal in 32 games for United.
Then Spurs halved the Reds' lead in the 63rd minute when Paul Konchesky crossed
from the left, Stephane Dalmat turned the ball into the middle and Poyet just
beat Ferdinand to prod it goalwards.
Earlier Sunday, Southampton jumped into fourth place with a 3-0 beating of
Portsmouth to leave its south-coast neighbour in relegation trouble.
Goals by Jason Dodd, Marian Pahars and James Beattie gave Saints a lopsided
victory at St. Mary's and improved their poor goals ratio.
Before the game, Gordon Strachan's team had scored only 15 in 16 matches.
The loss means that Harry Redknapp's men, promoted last season, remain in the
relegation zone only a month after being in the top four early in the
