Greetings everyone,
If you haven't yet read this article:
http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v02.n2330.a07.html do so, but even more
important is that you study the letters and other materials that have been
provided to prosecutors around the country.
PDF version:
http://www.ndaa-apri.org/pdf/alsobrooks_letter_nov_1_2002.pdf
The letter makes reference to this "Cannabis Youth Treatment Series" by the
DHHS found here: http://www.health.org/govpubs/bkd384/ The PDF version:
http://www.health.org/govpubs/bkd384/cyt1.pdf
The ONDCP is engaged in a full scale political attack utilizing the justice
system to manipulate political opinion, and a misinformation campaign
against "drug policy reformers" (...then they fight you...)
Though they have resorted to the "it's the TRUTH" parable, their arguments
are deceitfully worded, worthy of thoughtful factual rebuttal.
We can look forward to seeing a lot of this material making the newspapers.

Host Dean Becker called it right, below, another good radio show. For those
who missed it the URL below is for a low bandwidth realaudio file.
Mark had a number of callers with questions and praise, including two all
the way from Michigan.
Other topics covered besides the discussion with the guest included:
A tape of conservative Dan Burton speaking at the House Government Reform
Committee hearing in Congress on on "America's Heroin Crisis, Colombian
Heroin and How We Can Improve Plan Colombia." where the congressman really
ripped into the War on Drugs.
Editorial comments, including reading of a published letter by Matt Elrod.
And a variety of other drug war news and comments.

Thanks for the post, Jim.
We can start by catching them in this lie,
"According to the statistics given by the ONDCP,
marijuana is the most widely used drug in America. Of
the approximately 16 million current illicit drug
users, 12.2 million (about 77 percent) are using
marijuana"
Asa Hutchinson in EVERY appearance since his
appointment has cited, "illegal drug use is down to 11
million Americans.....cocaine is down 75%..."
I will research this in the MAP archive, so that our
writers can be prepared to offer the two conflicting
numbers....with the conclusion offered that the ONDCP
doesn't know what the hell the numbers are, but they
make them up to satisfy their propoganda.

It's also become rather clear that the Warriors sense
defeat and are making their latest run hoping to
exploit 'our' argument, which is to offer treatment
instead of jail to non-violent drug offenders.
The difference of course being that we clarify that
such treatment should only be for true cases of drug
dependency and abuse, while they define any and all
Use as meeting that definition.
We need to pound home to the 'fence sitters' in the
citizenry the absurdity of putting a marijuana user in
treatment at taxpayer expense.

I took a different tack on the drug czar. He calls for increased
prosecutions in a state that just released 567 convicts from prison because
they can't afford to imprison them.
Hello! Anybody in there?

Dear Editor,
Drug Czar Walters is not paying attention to the US economy or Kentucky.
Mr. Walters just called for increased marijuana prosecutions, while Kentucky
just had to release 567 convicts (many for marijuana) it couldn't afford to
imprison anymore. The US drug czar should know this. Who will pay for these
new marijuana cases?
The Fed's may deficit spend till they're blue in the face and not worry
about money but our states cannot. They have to pay the bills when due.
Money spent on marijuana convictions, reduces money spent on schools and
child development programs. The states cannot afford any increased marijuana
prosecutions. There were over 700,000 marijuana arrests last year, without
any effect on the US marijuana market. What's the point?
We spend billions of dollars on the drug war and we should see some results;
not just a prison gulag of two million low level drug offenders. These drug
dealers have already been replaced on the street. Radical prohibition laws
are the least effective method of drug control possible; just look at the
availability of drugs in the US right now. Is the drug war working yet? The
laws only punish people that get caught with drugs but have zero control
over contraband drug sales.
The last drug czar General McCaffrey said "we can't incarcerate our way out
of the drug problem."
Evidently Drug Czar Walters wan'nt listening.
Sincerely,
Kim Hanna
