In the future I'd suggest 'Ballot Initiative' sponsors run their
initiatives by the 'reform community' for critique.
With the mailing lists and weekly digests, like DRCnet-talk, MAP-talk,
etc....,
there'd be no shortage of critique and initiatives could be fine-tuned.
I've been a member of Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) for years
and I don't remember them running their initiative by we members for
suggestions/critique (please correct me if I missed it)
and they could have learned a lot from us.
'Focus Groups' of potential voters is far different than we hardcore
reformers.

Bruce Kleiman, a professor of policy studies at UCLA who researches
drug policy, crime and health care, said advocates bit off more than they
could chew, offering measures that went well beyond politically popular
medical marijuana laws, which have drawn as much as 80 percent support in
some polls.

Subj: 002 SOUTHPARK cartoon this week...Drug Education For Kids

Hey kids of all ages:
The current episode of Southpark (cartoon on Comedy
Central for those three people on the planet who may
not know of it) is totally centered on the theme of
educating kids about drugs.
It's the Dec 4 episode, replayed tonite in eastern
time zone at 10pm...those of you out west may still be
able to see it.
It will air again on Sunday evening at 11pm
EST...check your local listings.
For those who recognize Southpark but have never
checked it out, please consider either watching or
taping it. And be patient with its utter crudity and
admittedly gross humor quotient. The show centers
around the lives of four 9 year old boys in a small
town in Colorado. The underlying satirical message
of this particular episode is RIGHT ON POINT for us as
drug education reformers and frankly should make even
the most stodgy of us smile quite a bit.
Meanwhile for those who DO know the show, but missed
this week so far, here's the synopsis.
The episode begins with the boys in the park where
they discover an abandoned marijuana joint ("Look what
the sixth graders left here!!") None of them want to
pick it up and throw it away because they are
convinced that if you touch marijuana, your future is
doomed. Only one of them, Stan, believes the messages
are lies and he blithely takes the doobie and throws
it into the trash.
That nite, an electrical storm hit Southpark and the
next day, a 30 year old guy dressed a lot like Stan
shows up at his house. He is beaten down, drunk and
pretty much a loser. He declares that he is Stan's
FUTURE SELF who came thru a time warp and he is
carrying the message that his life sucks because he
got 'caught up in all that drug use and drinking' when
he was younger.
Ensuing hilarity assured as we find out who the guy
REALLY is and why he is REALLY
there......(Hint...Stan's parents telling each other,
"It's a lie, but the ends justify the means")
Gratuitous poop humor, lying parents, and two
dismemberments (one fake) also included. And of
course at the end, the boys reflect to soft piano
music about the lessons they've learned.
FOUR STARS and TWO THUMBS UP.

Yeah, I just caught this last night. I don't want to spoil it, but I wasn't
entirely happy with the message at the end (i.e., the "truth" about
marijuana). Still, pretty damn funny, and a lot of it was dead-on, and I
guess the end of it was about the best one could hope for, and not entirely
dishonest, but not entirely honest, either - sorta slipped in a red herring
rather than talking about some of the actual potential problems which could
stem from children smoking it. Still, not a bad effort at all. I like South
Park anyway, and frankly am a little surprised that they have kept it funny
as well as incisive this long, as it is so crude at times. But, hey, a part
of me loves that ...
BTW, I don't watch it all the time, but tend to catch most of the episodes
sooner or later, so I guess I missed something somewhere ... what happened
to Kenny? I know who Butter is and all, and it seems like he's the fourth
now, but I don't remember when Kenny actually left the show, if there even
was an episode (there must have been one to explain this, right?). And
where's Tweak? Or am I just completely out of the loop (or was Tweak in this
last episode and I just missed it, or maybe is Kenny not gone)? Ah, but
that's totally OT, so, if you know it, email me offlist ...

Dear Mr Klobas:
Thank you for contacting me regarding Salvia Divinorum. I appreciate and
understand your concerns.
Salvia Divinorum is a perennial herb in the mint family native to certain
parts of Mexico. In recent years some people have begun to smoke Salvia to
induce hallucinations similar to those induced by illicit drugs. There are
some concerns and studies that show that the drug may have a serious impact
on the brain and could cause permanent damage, however more research is
needed to be conclusive. The drug, however, is not on the controlled
substances list. It is worth noting that even drugs that are on the
controlled substance list can be used by legitimate medical professionals
and researchers for the research and medicinal possibilities that you
mention in your letter.
Representative Joe Baca (D-CA) introduced legislation on October 10, 2002
that would add Salvinorin A to the list of controlled substances. Currently
this legislation, H.R. 5607, is pending before both the House Energy &
Commerce Committee and the House Judiciary Committee and is unlikely to be
considered this year. While I do not serve on either of these committees, I
will keep your concerns in mind should this or similar legislation come
before me for a vote on the floor of the House in the future.
